Jawaharlal Nehru University

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) opened its doors in the early 1970s. The university strikes an excellent student-teacher ratio and has an innovative mode of instruction. For these characteristics, JNU has earned a reputation as one of the leading universities in India. JNU focuses especially on postgraduate education. The campus is a microcosm of the Indian nation, drawing students from every nook and corner of the country and from every group and stratum of society.

Apart from its contribution to the Global Studies Programme, the Centre for the Study of Social Systems (CSSS) conducts researches on social change, social movements, sociology of knowledge, religion and agrarian relations, gender studies, and studies on diaspora and on marginal groups. The Centre has been declared by the UGC to be a Centre of 'Excellence'. In addition, three Science Schools – the School of Physical Sciences, the School of Life Sciences and the School of Environmental Sciences – have also received UGC recognition as Centers of Excellence.

Ranked number one in India by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a Grade Point of 3.91 (on a scale of 4), JNU was ranked no 3 among all universities in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, Government of India, in 2016 and no 2 in 2017. JNU also received the Best University Award from the President of India in 2017. The excellent teacher-student ratio at 1:10 as well as the mode of instruction which encourages students to explore their own creativity instead of reproducing received knowledge were also new to the Indian academic landscape and have stood the test of time.
