Course summaries

 

To give you a better idea of the classes being taught at Chulalongkorn University, we are providing two examples of class summaries.

 

Thai and Southeast Asian Peoples and Cultures

The objective of this course is to understand the dynamism and diversity of peoples and cultures in Southeast Asia. Through the course, students will acquire an understanding of social and cultural change in Southeast Asia under the processes of globalization. A general overview of Southeast Asia and its geographical structures form the background against which different cultures and ethnic groups in the region can be approached and discussed.

 

Globalization and Development in the Asia and Pacific Region

This course provides an overview of the relationship between globalization, regionalism and development as it plays out in the particular context of Southeast Asia. The course examines regional developments and their dynamics and impacts, and gives attention to the working of ASEAN as the main regional entity. Economic, social and political dimensions of ASEAN and its member states will be discussed and contextualized, with special attention given to transnational processes and their intersection with inequity and diversity trends in the region. Altogether, the course aims at introducing key theoretical approaches and empirical works on the meanings, causes, and consequences of globalization, focusing on its social, political, economic, and cultural dimensions within Southeast Asia.
